Questions regarding Tax in US - Married file jointly etc?I moved to US after March, 2007 from Canada. So, in US, I can choose as full or part year resident.
Q1: When I choose full year resident, and report Canadian income, is it total income or taxable income?
Q2: When I choose part year resident, can I file MFJ (married file jointly)?
Thanks advance for your help

Thanks for the quick response! U mean if I report as part year resident, I still can report MFJ? The CPA I used told me I can only report separately if I don't elect full year resident.

really sorry.

How did you report your Canadian income to US? Is that total income?

this is called foreign income exclusion. In 2007, in total, u can exclude 85700 the maximum. But in the case u only lived in foreign for 1 month, u can exclude 85700 *31/365=7278. So, u still need to report the rest.

the dual status is confusing, I phoned IRS, they gave me different answers. One said I can join, one said I can't. headache
