As a Canadian citizen. You do not have to meet any physical residence. Just report your world income to IRS and report as a resident

tax treaty - non -discrimination clause - that is, anything a US citizen can do for tax, you can do.

There is a form. I did that. However, I was told you do not have to. When they challenge you, just tell you are a Canadian. Once again, I am not a professional. I just think it is not a big problem.

8833 - but do not ask me how to fill the form. I just did based on my understanding. No problem so far. You can just state that you are Canadian citizen and reported world income. And want to be treated as us resident for tax purpose.

If u report to IRS as resident and world income, it means your Canadian income will be TOP of US income which mostly will be taxed at a high rate, and no RRSP savings. Will you even pay much more tax?

For example: u have 50k income in Canada, and u bought 10k RRSP. But 80k in US. So, if u report the 50k to US, it means mostly u will be at least 25%, but in Canada, u may pay less since u have 10k RRSP.

this seems strange, seems only difference is the standard deductable as u mentioned. There seems no room to declare part year, although the state has this option

Although US does not recognize RRSP, you can buy IRA and 401K to reduce the taxable income, in a similiar way as in Canada. Higher income also gives you benefits when you buy a home and require income validation.

This normally no help since you also want to rely on 401k to reduce your US income tax. And you end up with a lot of cash in RRSP/401k
