I am not in Toronto, so my advixe cannot make much sense. Come in.It seems to me you are a decscent programmer. But your sckill set is quite small. Pure C programmers have not many opportunites. On the other hand, your Java skills are not very strong, sounds superficial. I suggest decorate yourself into a C++ and Java programmer . Probably, you need read some tutorials and run some demos from Sun's site.
Corba is not so hot.

Thanks a lot, jabber. I know what I should to do depends on myself. I like java and I believe that I could become a good java programmer after hard learning and practice. But ,you know, the java market is not as popular as last year. I am wandering if I can get an opportunity in this rough market. And I have not bad skill in unix/c while I have some knowledge of C++ . But I HAVE TO select one to pay more attention to , that's my problem: which skill should I emphasize and which one should I abandon? Thanks for your consideration.

I think you don't need to choose from Java and C++. They are a bit similar (so it's not so hard to be familiared with both of them for you), and your UNIX experience will also give you a lot help.

Let me try to answer your questionWithin a short time, you cannot become a guru in every field. However, you should know well the basic skills in some field. Let me say you have a thorough understanding of Jason Hunter's Servlet Programming. You have run all the code in the book. At the same time, you have tried to write your own code. Now if you go out for a job, if you happen to meet an interviewer who asks you a lot of Java Servlet and JSP questions, you may get the job. Job=skill + chance.
