本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛APPLICATION FOR P.ENG (2)
I have to declare that all my advice is based on my own understanding and it’s better for you to double-check them through: www.peo.on.ca and any correction would be VERY MUCH appreciated.
STEP 1 GO TO PEO WEBSITE
Go to the above PEO website and click the icon ‘licensing and registration’, under this, you could find everything relating to applying for P.Eng. You could know the detailed requirement and you could also have a first look at what the application form looks like.
STEP 2 MAKE DECISION, GO OR NOT GO
After you read the contents about P.Eng application, you may have got some idea on what requirement is suitable to you, thinking of both the two aspects: academic and experience.
If you are a B.E or B.S (Master are not discussed here), have over 5 years experience in China (most of Chinese Non-It engineers satisfy this), you could possibly be entitled to an interview to confirm your academic level. In this case, if you pass it, you could be waived from some stupid confirmatory examinations. That would save you at least 2 years. If you have over 5 years previous experience, you are hopeful to get the license within 2 or 3 years if you pass the interview. So you can see, your only enemy is the INTERVIEW. It is not so difficult if you well-prepare it.
So far, have you determine that you would like to try? Yes! Ok. Go to the next step.
STEP 3 SELECTING YOUR REFERREE
As directed by the PEO website, you can e-mail to them to ask for an application form right now, or download it. But I would advise that you ask for a mailed form booklet and it is easy for you to fill in and it also looks decent and serious. If you ruined your mailed copy due to mistakes, just re-ask them to send another one. It’s free.
After you receive it, read the requirement all through the booklet and make sure you understand what information you need to fill in. As regard to your personal information, it’s a piece of cake. But you may frown when you turn the referee page. Don’t be so afraid on this. You can leave it blank if you have no job and really can not anybody could be referee for you. Don’t worry. As I said, you can update the information at any time when it changes. Just e-mail to your designated agent to update everything. You should know it would probably takes at least 1 year before they invite you to an interview and the information of referee only be used after you pass Professional Practice Examination.
If you are working in an engineering company, be brave to talk to your supervisor and tell him what you are going to do and what you expect him to do. If he is a P.Eng, it is easy for him to understand this and it is not possible for him to reject you. Then you get your first referee.
Then what about the other two? Maybe you are shy and not confident to talk to your colleague engineers to be your referee, Don’t worry, while you are talking to your supervisor, and he agrees to be your referee, do not off his room right away. Continue saying that as PEO’s requirement, I have to get three referees, could you please recommend some engineers here to be my referees? He would probably say: Maybe you could talk to AAA and BBB. And even further, he would lead you to their rooms and talked to them directly. If you are supposed to go by yourself, don’t be hesitate, just go and say it politely: I just talked to XXX (your supervisor) that I am applying for P.Eng. Would you like to be one of my referees? If he knows you well, and your supervisor’s signature is on your form, it would NOT be reasonable for him say ‘no’. So it is better for you to show them your form and let them to fill in their information in case they would deny later. It’s always wise to ask for two sets of forms and leave one set with your referee’s handwritings home.
If you only can find two referees, don’t worry; just leave one line blank temporarily. Things are getting better and you are getting to know more engineers, either from your colleague or your client and if it is the right time, just take out that handwriting form and ask them to be one. They would not so hesitate to sign their name when they see your supervisor has already signed. One year is not short to find other ones and you can update your referree information just by e-mail click.
Any questions about selecting referees? But be careful when you choose referees and try to establish good relationship with them. Appropriate compliments before and afterwards are always a effective way. Because when PEO send questionnaire to them about your experience and capability, their bad words will affect or destroy your efforts. So be careful they are nice person and have at least not bad relationship with you.
While you are trying to find somebody to be your referee, you can prepare your documentation requested as part of application at the same time. We are going to talk about this next.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
