Most people will openly admit that they just aren’t very good at office politics. Yet, politics are everywhere. Savvy people heed them, watch for them and play the game following certain rules. Those that don’t are what networking guru, Susan RoAne, calls “the clue impaired.”
The first six months in a new job, listen, don’t talk. Observe who eats with whom, who commutes together.
The next time you are in a staff meeting and an assignment is handed out to someone, watch their facial expression, read their body language. Body language accounts for 55% of the communicated message. Take notice as well as to who gets what kind of assignments.
Listen to conversations in washrooms, people tend to be quite straight forward with each other in a washroom. Without being an eavesdropper, when you can hear conversations between cubicles, listen to what is being said and notice the tone which accounts for 38% of a communicated message.
Converse with everyone. Be a dedicated team player with subordinates, peers and superiors.
