Unfortunately race weekend did not start off as planned. I took a spill on my bike riding to work Friday and banged up my elbow pretty good. Brutal road rash and a bad bruise had me very worried about the swim, as well as the bike since I was not able to lean on my aero bars in my usual position. (Ouch!) With lots of bandages and a few improvisations, I made it work, but definitely not ideal.
Swim - 2000m
With a mass start of nearly 500 people, the swim was a bit hairy. I think I know how the laundry feels! I was jostled and trampled, all the while swimming "defensively" and trying to protect my elbow from being banged. It was a rectangular swim in the canal and the water was great. The start and turns were nuts with people all over each other and I had a few little panics, but otherwise it went pretty well.
2000m - 38:24 - 1:55/100m
Transition 1 - we had about a 400m run (barefoot on pavement) up to transition. I was in and out pretty quick. Combined time of run-up + transition = 3:29
Bike - 90K
I went into the bike without knowing what to expect and without really having a plan (not necessarily recommended - ha!). I have discovered that my strength definitely lies here, however I don't have a lot of experience (only rode 90K twice) and didn't get many brick workouts in during my mini 8-week training cycle. I had more or less decided to go on "feel" and keep it at a moderate level of difficulty. I should point out that it was a nice and flat course! Other than a slew of mishaps (very uncomfortable in modified bike position due to elbow, shoe undone, water bottle issues, hit a bad pothole and lost all of my repair stuff + nutrition, clusters of people drafting illegally that I had to get around), it was a great ride.
90K - 2:36:53 - 34.4 KPH
Transition 2 - ditch the bike + helmet, swap shoes and GO! = 1:00
Run - 21.1K
Starting a half marathon after a 2K swim and 90K bike at almost 12 noon... well this was going to be different! Legs were wobbly to start, but they came around. I was happy to be off the bike, to be honest. It's draining to ride for so long, staying 100% focused (for safety reasons). It was a relief to relax a bit. I found my legs and they were understandably tired, but manageable. Thankfully we had shade on paved park paths for almost the entire run. I enjoyed the double out-and-back course for lost of distractions and a couple of familiar faces. Second half of the run was tough -- VERY tough -- but I used every mental trick in the book to keep going, and made it to the finish.
21.1K - 1:54:16 - 5:25/KM
Overall: 5:13:59
Definitely pleased (and surprised - I thought 5:30 was a stretch goal) and very sore/tired. I wonder why it took me so long to explore this "dark side." :) This time last year I would have told you I'll never do a triathlon. Just goes to show ya - you never know.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
