本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛It is time for electing the mayor of Toronto again. If you live in the city of Toronto, I strongly urge you to cast your vote with all of your eligible family members. Regardless if you know any of the candidates, participation is the key. Actively participating in the political life is a very important way to gain equality and respect in Canadian society and contribute to our new homeland. Probably most of you already know what I am talking about. But I would say sometimes it is easy to say and hard to do. So let's do it on Oct 25.
By the way, I like to take this opportunity to share with you some of my thoughts. In Canada equality, respect to each other are common "face" values among majority of citizens. But the sad reality is these values are not a given and we need to earn them. It is not just for our well being and more importantly for our children's. Making our voice visible and making our contributions to this country memorable are an important first step. Let us not have the history repeat itself. Thousands of Chinese labourors worked for building the Canadian transcontinental railways and many of them died but none of the survivors were invited to the completion ceremony.
I will give my vote to Mr. Tang the only Mayoral candidate from our Chinese community even though I don't know him at all. The right wing Rob Ford is the front runner so far. He has a quite successful campaign team assembled from across the country. None of us is part of his core voter base. If you vote for him, his win will not be becuase of your vote or a vote from our Chinese community. In other words, your vote is invisible to most of people. It is almost certain every vote for Mr. Tang is from us. Probably he won't be elected anyway. However it is a strong message to the politicians and Torontonians the Chinese community is a united strong political force. Within our Chinese community, voting for Mr. Tang serves as a strong encouraging signal to the" politicans to be" that you can get even more votes from us if you believe you are better suitted than Mr. Tang running for public jobs. Regardless of Mr Tang's intention in this mayoral election, he does make me proud and he from our Chinese community makes a very important first step to be in the spotlight. Like him or not, he is the only one!更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
