 And even as we embrace people who leave other places and come here, we often criticize those who leave. But if you view Canada as more than just a geographical construct, Canada’s values remain constant wherever they go-and those who live elsewhere often become our best ambassadors, in the same way that immigrants to Canada never have to leave their background behind. The underlying logic in both cases is the same. We live in a country where East and West often argue, where tiffs between Quebec and the rest of Canada are a given, and where everyone outside of Torontonians loves to mock Toronto. And yet we survive, and, overall, flourish. So is our uneasiness about our relationship with America all that different from the manner in which we relate among ourselves? The answer to that defines not only who we are, but who we will ultimately become.
