OTTAWA - Four Canadians are dead after an American plane accidentally dropped at least one bomb during a live fire training exercise in Afghanistan.

Eight others were injured in the blast. Two of them are reported to be in critical condition.

The American F-18 fighter jet dropped the bombs during a training exercise near Kandahar Wednesday. The incident took place about 14 kilometres south of the Kandahar Airport.

Reports indicate that the victims were members of the Edmonton-based Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. No identities have been released pending notification of family members.

The Defence Department has called a news conference for midnight eastern time at department headquarters in Ottawa.
