本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I have organized dance lesson for beginner friends since high school. we learned from each other in a free and easy way. The important thing is to have fun and grow friendships. It is one tip to be single and happy.
Lesson 1: <<Dance with me>>
Has anybody ever watched “Dancing With the Stars”? Probably most people here have witnessed the overwhelming popularity of this TV show, together with Latin dance in the past two years. Now, I am dancing my way to fun and fitness through Latin rhythms.
As you know, Latin dance originated in Africa and was brought into Latin America by the immigrants. It was standardized in the UK in 1920s and became very popular in Shanghai, China in 1930s. China hosted its first International Standard Dance Competition in 1986. I was amazed by the beauty of Latin dance for the first time as a teenager. Of course, I did not expect it would spice up the whole world 20 years later.
To me, the most attractive merits of Latin dance are the movement and music. Latin dance is sultry and physical, characterized with quick paced rhythms and playful hip movements. The dances are derived from, and named after the type of music they are danced to, such as Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, Samba and Salsa. Latin music is rich, vibrant, quick, and romantic. It blends African and European traits, and has been a great influence on popular music around the world.
Latin dance became really fashionable among modern Chinese in recent years. If you go to the big cities in China today, you will see people practicing Latin dance in the streets, in the parks and at various studios and clubs. More and more young people and kids participate in domestic and international Latin Ballroom competitions.
Though lured by Latin dance for many years, I did not have opportunity to work on it until last summer when my mom visited me from China. My mom is a ballroom dance fan. At my age, it was too late to learn Ballet, but it was never too late to start Latin dance. My mom and her friend taught me some basic steps for Rumba – the Box step. Now I tap on the floors of the dance hall, the living-room, the kitchen, and even on the trail during my lunch break. Practice keeps me busy and my time alone is a lot of fun.
Latin dance is not only entertaining, but it is also very healthy. Scientific research shows Latin dancing consumes a lot of energy. A dancer twists his/her waist 160~180 times during a piece of Rumba music. At the end of each dance, the heart beat could reach 197 times per minute for a female and 210 times per minute for a male. As a result, the energy consumption of one dance is equivalent to the amount that an athlete finishes an 800-meter run. Latin dance burns more fat than Badminton and Tennis.
I had musculoskeletal disorder problem from long-time office work. My neck pain disappeared after I started practicing Latin dance. It also improved my posture. I used to be like this for 30 years, but now I am like this. I feel younger and more confident.
Last but not least important, I cannot forget it is because I came to Canada that I can really get personal exposure to many different cultures such as Latin dance, Italian cuisine and African sculpture… Let’s take a moment to appreciate multiculturalism, the best gift one can receive from this wonderful country!
My friends and I will join a Salsa lesson for beginners, starting NOW. Want to dance with me? Let's go!更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
