A Yahoo executive confirmed Friday that the company plans to open a large
engineering branch in Bellevue, at the One Twelfth @ Twelfth office property.
The Sunnyvale, Calif., company is already occupying temporary space in the
complex, said David Sobeski, a Yahoo senior vice president who was a
Microsoft Windows general manager before going to Yahoo last year.
Sobeski declined to give hiring projections, but acknowledged that the 115,
000 square feet leased by the company is enough to accommodate between 500
and 600 employees. To this point, Yahoo's presence in the Seattle region has
been limited to a handful of employees.
Yahoo, Google and Redmond-based Microsoft are head-to-head competitors in
Internet search and a wide variety of Web-based services.
Search leader Google, based in Mountain View, Calif., opened an office in
Kirkland in 2004. It has grown to more than 400 employees in the city since
then, has added a branch in Fremont and recently has leased a three-building
complex under construction in Kirkland.
Sobeski, a driving force behind the creation of Yahoo's Bellevue office,
said the company decided to establish the office in the region to tap into
its pool of engineering talent. He acknowledged that Yahoo would be open to
people from Microsoft applying for jobs at the company, but he said he
wouldn't actively seek to recruit people from there.
"If you have a little bit of values, you don't go poach from your old
employer," he said.
At the same time, Sobeski said, "We're here to build a good presence of
engineers. You know what, if Microsoft guys want to come and ask us
questions, great. Google guys? Great. We'll talk to everybody."
Sobeski, senior vice president for platforms and architecture, declined to
detail the specific focus of Yahoo's Bellevue office. However, Yahoo's
advertised job openings in Bellevue include engineering positions on the
Query and Storage platform team, and on the team building the framework for
the next generation of its Internet platform.
The completion of the lease had previously been confirmed by a person
familiar with the deal, but Yahoo had declined to acknowledge it until
Friday, because it was previously in a "quiet period" related to the release
