here is the salary statistics for 2005-6 H1b at google, position: software engineer

Employee, who has master degree, get 86k in average
Employee, who has Ph.D, get 102K in average

These are base salary for new hires. The stock option and bonus is not counted. Note that once you get in, your base salary will not increase dramatically. A 5% is very good. Also note that HR DOES have a guide line for salary. There is a common market range. Each company will chose to give an average salary or above average salary, depending on some facts.

If you want to get higher salary, you need to "JUMP" and "JUMP" locally.
