If you believe your baby is ready to eat solid and he's not going to have any food allergies, you can just go ahead. Otherwise, either your baby might be in trouble or you might be under too much pressure from your M-I-L.
Anyways, I believe adding baby cereal or adding egg yolk are both for the iron (correct me if I'm wrong). And I haven't added any egg yolk (there might be some in the store bought jar food, but I didn't make any myself yet) to my baby who's almost 10 months old, he's smart enough to be that age of baby as I think.
