It's a wonderful time of the year isn't it? The leaves have
turned and have fallen to the ground, the air is crisp (unless
you live in the South) and the retailers are hitting you hard
during the commercial breaks of your favorite shows. It's great
right? Well...maybe for you, but for the thousands (millions?)
out of work, the holidays can be some of the worst times. You're
not working, you have no money to go out and buy gifts for your
family, you can't even afford to buy your spouse something
smashing, and heaven forbid you have kids.
In this time, it is very easy to get depressed and withdrawn. The
last thing you want right now is to be cheered up. I know, I
know. But here's the kicker, you have to. Your family is
depending on you. Sure, it stinks that your ex-two income family
is now only one income and that you have to spend all your time
on the computer or on the telephone trying to track down hiring
managers in order to get your resume in their face. But you can't
let it get you down.
I even heard one person say, "I don't feel like I even deserve
Christmas!" As if your earning an income has anything to do with
being able to enjoy a wonderful time of the year with your family
and friends. It's not about the gifts (although they are nice),
and it's not about whether or not you can run out to the latest
sale and drool over the things you can't have, it's about the joy
and happiness.
Let this time of the year be a pick-me-up and not a downer. Let
it be a time of relaxation and not a time of stress. Put up your
lights, decorate your tree (if you go to a tree farm and cut it
yourself, you'll save about 75% on the price of a real tree) and
have a good time. Go to Christmas parties, get dressed up, feel
good about yourself. The last thing you need to do is curl up in
a ball in your home office chair and shut out the world.
So, enjoy the cool air. Get a kick out of raking leaves; say "Hi"
to a neighbor and just let it go. Next year is a new year, full
of possibilities. This is a slow hiring time of the year anyway
so don't let the lack of new job postings bring you down. Take a
few minutes to send "Thank You" E-mails to those who have helped
you out in your job search, that alone will go a long ways
towards relationship building.
Have a Wonderful Holiday Season!
