My experience with a U.S. recruiter (just so you know, my field is not IT, nor accounting)

A recruiter in U.S. called me right after I posted my resume on Monster. Soon afterwards, I got a phone screen for a contract position. During the phone interview, I discovered that what the recruiter said didn't match the info from the hiring manager.
I turned down the offer as the package was very unattractive. The hiring manager told me that the recruiter would take away 40%, that's why.
In the hiring process, the recruiter played all kinds of games. For example, after I formally declined his offer, he said his company president suggested that I sign the contract and continue looking for permanent positions. There was no contractual obligations. I can use the offer as my backup, and they retain my service. bla bla blah...
Be aware of unethical recruiters. At least my recruiter intentionally provided misleading information, and was very pushy all the time.
