Just because he mentioned "moving to Toronto".

I've been to both Toronto and Seattle. You're right, Toronto's living standard is quite high. The most ridiculous one is the transportation fee, such as car insurance and TTC/YRT/GO price. Car rental price is higher too.

However, the housing and food are cheaper in Toronto. And there're abundant kinds of chinese food. If you ever shopped in Seattle's supermakets, you will feel that you're shopping in Loblaws, or even more expensive.

And the kid-related programs/services are much much cheaper in Toronto.

      • :-)
      • it's free, :D
    • Las Vegas!
        • Toronto has lower living expense than Seattle and it has more multi-culture stuff.
If I were in your case, I will go back to Toronto. But I think living in different place will cause different tax.

In Seattle, you don't need to pay state income tax. This is a big difference, though the living cost is too high.
          • "go back to Toronto"? you assume he was from Toronto. Living cost is not really high compare Seattle to Toronto. Especially US$ to C$ is almost 1:1 now.

        • I see. 80K in Seattle is quite difficult. That's why you posted for help.
If you want to buy a house, move south to Portland. If you don't, move north to Vancouver. Or find a small town between Seattle and Vancouver. Then you can enjoy low housing and life of big cities. Since it's still in Washington, you can keep enjoying no-state-tax.
Do you mean you have 90K CA$ after tax?
That should be more than enough to buy a decent house in Toronto.

However, if you only have 90K CA$ before tax and you have not bought a house, and more importantly, if you want to buy a house in Richmond Hills or some other hot areas, you will be in difficult.

As you mentioned, it's hard to accumulate $90K-$100K for down-payment with this before tax income. Because you did not earn $90K from the first year. However, it is still enough to afford a quite good house. I think the major reason that you don't want to buy a house now is that you missed the chance to buy when it's still cheap. Now you become hesitated to buy at high point.
            • Sorry,
