The screening is FREE for students with valid ID and reservation. The film is an award-winning documentary that shows the life of a Chinese acrobat and magician who overcame isolation, poverty and extreme racism to become one of the most successful vaudeville acts around the world. His story is one of tolerance and destroying stereotypes.
The Monkey King Collective (MKC) is made up of Chinese youth volunteers and they organized a series of film screenings to illustrate topics that are not normally discussed: Chinese history, identity, race and stereotypes, and more. This is the first film in the series.
In addition, "The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam" was made by Ann Marie Fleming, a Canadian filmmaker, and great-granddaughter of Long Tack Sam. The film has won numerous awards and was the official selection of many prestigious film festivals around the world including the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival and 2003 Reel Asian Film Festival.
