No. Pre-approval is just an estimate for that specific time. If your condition changes when you sign the mortgage contract, everything can be changed. When applying for a pre-approval, the bank may not check your credit, so it won't affect your credit (of course, it is for estimate purpose only).

Each bank has different policies of effective date of the pre-approval. The fixed rate will be protected for a period of time (60 - 120 days after the date of pre-approval, or 60 - 120 days before closing date).

I'd go to a broker to get the pre-approval.
