Solutions Architect Level III
(Entry Level for the Solutions Architect Track, parallel to Level III of Territory SE/Product Specialist)
Major Job Duties:
l Takes high level requirements and develops solutions using BEA and third-party product independently
l Performs proof-of-concepts by themselves or as the engagement technical lead
l Produces detailed documentation and architectural write-ups from engagements
l Troubleshoots distributed application issues (involving both BEA and non-BEA products and hardware) to determine the cause of the problem with some assistance
l Cultivates relationships with SE/Sales Account teams and their management
l Leads high-level technical discussions and technically qualify the opportunity
l Discusses high-level solution viability and implementation strategies
l Maps high-level business problems to BEA technology solutions independently
l Customizes standard demos to meet customer’s business needs
l Provides technical workshops in order to facilitate a working level of knowledge with BEA products, as needed
l Cultivates relationships with customer’s technical staff and their management
l Reviews open issues with Territory SEs before customer engagement
l Tracks customer’s technical issues encountered during customer engagements and escalates to others in BEA, where needed
l Provides product feedback (customer requirements, product shortcomings, enhancements, etc.) to appropriate people
l Provides answers to SE questions concerning implementation issues around building applications using BEA products. This includes taking ownership of questions, researching the questions with either more senior members of their group or other groups within BEA, and following up with the SE in a timely fashion
Experience:
l Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent
l 3-8 years industry experience
l 3 years experience as an SE, consultant with customer focus, or equivalent experience
Technical Skills (In Addition to Territory SE Level III Technical Skills):
l Has working knowledge of at least one “built-on” product (e.g., WLP or WLI) and WebLogic Server
l Has a working knowledge of Ant and other OS-level scripting languages (e.g., DOS batch, Unix sh, etc.)
l Has a working knowledge of at least one source code control system.
l Has a good understanding of object-oriented design and development
Leadership Traits: Same as Product Specialist Level III Leadership Traits
Solutions Architect Level IV
Major Job Duties (In Addition to Solutions Architect Level III Duties):
l Conducts and leads architecture discussions and assessments
l Explains implementation details of BEA platform products to customers at the appropriate level of detail
l Takes detailed engineering information and convey it to customers at the appropriate level of detail
l Provides product feedback (customer requirements, product shortcomings, enhancements, etc.) to product management and/or engineering
l Becomes a trusted advisor to SEs and other account team members
l Establishes credibility and trust with customers
l Actively participates in engagement planning and management as a member of the account team
l Mentors other SEs on architecture skills
l Develops technology-related “how-to” guides that other BEA field personnel can use to learn how to accomplish different technical tasks.
l Assists/gives input to Field Education on design and content of education programs
l Actively work to sell the architecture to its various stakeholders, communicating extensively and working networks of influence to ensure the ongoing success of the architecture
Experience:
l Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent
l 6-11 years industry experience
l 6 years experience as an SE, consultant with customer focus, or equivalent experience
l 2 years as a BEA Solutions Architect

l Applies common distributed systems design patterns to solutions

Solutions Architect Level V
Major Job Duties (In Addition to Solutions Architect Level IV Duties):
l Spends a portion of their time working with other senior technologists within BEA to develop best practices as related to BEA products
l Works with regional management to improve the technical service offerings of the Solutions Architects and their application in customer engagements
l Writes white papers on best practices, industry-specific technology domains, solutions-oriented topics, etc.
l Sees a problem/solution from multiple perspectives and evaluate architectural trade-offs from different points of view
l Assesses an organization’s business vision, strategic objectives, core competencies, and architectural maturity, and how these relate to their charter
l Balances the need to add complexity to a solution with the customer’s abilities to understand, implement, and maintain that solution
l Work with Product Management and Engineering on product phase reviews to help shape the future releases
l Has a strong sense of the business and technical strategy required to envision the “right” architectural approach to the customer’s problem set given their business objectives
l Leads the customer’s architecture team and the developer community to set its technical direction
Experience:
l Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent
l 9-14 years industry experience
l 9 years experience as an SE, consultant with customer focus, or equivalent experience
l 5 years as a BEA Solutions Architect

l Creates technology roadmaps, sets technology direction, and determines the consequences for the technical strategy and hence the architectural approach
l Works across an enterprise to create leverage and synergies and avoid duplication and inconsistency across the enterprise
l Contributes substantially to engineering and product management to steer BEA product vision and technical direction
l Creates and builds technical synergy between Geographic territories around world
l Provides SE management with strategy and technical guidance for the SE geographic field teams
