Here are some precautions to prevent frozen water pipes during a cold spell:
Freezing usually occurs in pipes along outside walls and/or areas with poor heating or draughts. If you haven't done so already, locate the shut-off valve for your outdoor tap (on the inside wall or ceiling where the pipe leads outside). Turn it off, place a container underneath, then remove the drain cap on the side of the valve to allow residual water in the line to drain. Opening the outdoor tap may speed the process. Re-close outside tap and replace drain cap on valve afterward.
Electric heat bands can protect water pipes in areas prone to freezing. Resembling an extension cord, this product is strapped along the pipe.
When necessary, the built-in thermostat turns on the heat, so pipes won't freeze and burst.
Water pipe heat bands are available in various lengths, from 3-80 feet ($24 and up) at hardware stores. A 120-volt outlet is required. If an extension cord is needed, select a heavy duty, grounded extension cord.
Do not use heat bands in outdoor locations.
For safety, follow all installation instructions and re-inspect wires annually. Replace immediately if damage is suspected.
