Location and Working Hours
• Location of assignment is within the GTA
• Normal working hours are 7.25 hours per day, five days a week, Monday to Friday.

ASSIGNMENT TITLE / PROJECT NAME: Wireless LAN Architecture (WLA) Framework consistent with OPS Enterprise Architecture Strategy

EXPECTED END DATE: March 31, 2005

The Services required include, but are not limited to:

Background

The goal of the Wireless LAN (or WLAN) Reference Architecture Framework project is to establish a
high-level architecture, guidelines, standards, and best-practices for the OPS to develop and manage
WLAN services. Considerable prior work has been done on WLAN by OPS working groups with
various documents, requirements gathering, and recommendations ready for reuse. This activity needs to
have a clear conclusion and appropriate review at Architecture Core Team (ACT) and Architecture
Review Board (ARB) approval needs to take place.

Assignment

The purpose of this request is to acquire a Technology Architect Wireless subject matter expert to
facilitate the business requirements gathering for the planning, design & implementation of a wireless
networking Reference Architecture Framework, the output of this project will be to produce a completed
WLAN Reference Architecture Framework.

The Office of the Corporate Chief Technology Officer (OCCTO) Corporate Architecture & Standards Branch is looking for a Technology Architect to:

• establish the business requirements at the context level for a WLAN Reference Architecture Model for the Ontario Government.
• establish an approved WLAN Reference Architecture Framework, consistent with OPS Enterprise Architecture, which will guide the OPS in the implementation of WLAN Services.

WLAN services need to be carefully designed to:

 Provide convenience, streamlined client provisioning, seamless mobility, and robust security to the wireless user
 Leverage existing Network Services (i.e. LAN, Firewall, VPN, Encryption, Remote Access, Identity & Authentication)
 Promote adoption & re-use across the OPS Enterprise
 Leverage work artifacts that have been completed on the OPS Remote Access Services (RAS) Reference Architecture.

The WLAN service should be consistent with the OPS I&IT Electronic Service Delivery strategy. This strategy promotes anywhere, anytime network access to applications and infrastructure services: (see diagram below).

Deliverables of the project are:

1. Produce business model for a WLAN reference architecture model.
2. Conduct a review of existing WLAN and related projects (Network Connectivity, Remote Access Reference Architecture, Mobility-Wireless, & Collaboration) documentation to determine gaps.
3. Produce a completed WLAN Reference Architecture Framework including:

• Business/system use cases (Enterprise Main Office, Branch, Small Remote Office), Technology independent guidelines (policy & procedures) based on Business/IT Strategy, Architecture principles & policies, standards and best practices.
• A description of relevant Enterprise infrastructure services necessary to support WLAN Services deployment (e.g. LAN, Remote Access service, Authentication, VPN, Encryption, Firewall and other security services, etc).

4. Produce a baseline Security framework for internal enterprise WLAN (OPS) and external (G2G, G2B, G2C) & WLAN “hotspot” access.
5. Develop an enterprise governance and review framework, including roles and responsibilities, for Wireless LAN Service.
6. Produce power-point presentations for MBS of work products and project work activities, & Architecture Review Board (ARB) of Business Reference Model for WLAN Reference Model (for Check-point 1 internal governance process).
