I've both types of the washer. After I started to use the front-loading washer, I never use the up-loading washer any more.
There're following advantages:
1) save water
2) save energy
3) save the cloth
4) clean
5) low noise (very empressive for the low noise)
The only disadvantage is: It's expensive. The cheapest one you can buy is $800. Anyway, you can save PST so the total cost is $856.
I don't think we need dryer for following reasons:
1) cost a lot of electricity
2) many cloth will go smaller and smaller, if they're bought from china.
