Life on the gold rush trail wasn't easy. Stories that claimed nuggets the size of a man's fist seemed like an illusion. Most men's hard toil for treasure and glory left them with nothing but dust, pain, and headache. Picture young men from all walks of life, carrying everything they had, lining up to take a steamship up river to their dreams of gold. For those lucky few who struckpay dirt, the dangers were only beginning. Many miners were robbed or swindled of their gold. Still others lost their fortunes were made off the hands of the gold miners misfortunes. Jobs on the trail were many and men could easily jump from jobs like a blacksmith to proprietor. There are many who made great fortunes, and many who squandered their riches dying as paupers. The rea measure of the gold rush's treasure was not the amount of the gold but the legacy of those man whose path of toil built the foundations of British Columbia
