A second suite is a self-contained rental unit in a single-detached or semi-detached house. Most second suites are basement apartments. They have also been called granny flats, in-law suites and accessory apartments. The new bylaw permits second suites in all single-detached and semi-detached homes throughout the City of Toronto with certain conditions. The Landlord Self Help Centre has Information for homeowners about Toronto's second suites bylaw and how to put one in your home.
Getting started: if you are planning to create a second suite, you or your contractor must contact your district Building staff as all new second suites require building permits and must meet Ontario Building Code requirements, zoning bylaws and other laws that may apply.
